Trend: Hospitals reselling EMRs to physician offices

Physician Practice Advisor, October 12, 2005

An increasing number of hospitals are offering their electronic medical records (EMRs) to physician offices, with the aim of improving patient care and ties with physicians, American Medical News (AMN) reports.

Hospitals that are offering these deals include:

  • IL-based Evanston Northwestern Healthcare will license its EMR system to physicians for free, though they must pay for installation and support.
  • CA-based Sutter Health will sell its system to community-based doctors when it is completed in 2006.
  • Washington, D.C.-based MedStar Health plans to sell its system to affiliated physicians. MedStar is currently working out the details of the plan.

Stark and anti-kickback law compliance requires the hospitals to charge fair market value for the systems, though it is unclear what that is, AMN reports.
