Quality scores up to par for U.S. for-profit hospitals

Quality Improvement Monitor, October 7, 2005

For-profit hospitals received quality scores close to the average for all U.S. hospitals, according to a Morgan Stanley & Co. audit of CMS Hospital Compare data.

Among the seven largest for-profit hospital companies, Triad Hospitals achieved the highest score at 79.6%, followed by Tenet Healthcare Corp. at 79.5%, according to Modern Healthcare magazine. HCA received a score of 78%.

With the average score for U.S. hospitals being 75%, these hospitals were adequate in quality of care, but room for improvement existed, the study said. With average scores, challenges may arise for hospital operators as private payers and the government may adopt pay-for-performance reimbursement, but improved scores could help them obtain business from local competitors, Modern Healthcare reported.
