Part D poll: Docs recommend going to pharmacists for enrollment information
Physician Practice Advisor, October 5, 2005
Eighty percent of physicians who were asked in a PPA survey two weeks ago about their initial reaction to the new Medicare drug plans said they will urge patients to talk to pharmacists for enrollment information. Sixty-five percent said they'd direct patients to their pharmacy for questions about getting reimbursed for drugs not on a plan's formulary.
"Pharmacists aren't supposed to recommend plans, but I wouldn't be surprised if that starts to happen-we may have little reimbursement, but customer service is important.[our] customers will leave us if we don't help them," says Jan Tremont, a pharmacist at a CVS in West Hartford, CT. Only two doctors of the 50 who responded said they would handle questions themselves. The remainder of physicians did not know how they would assist patients.
