Vermont agrees to federal Medicaid funding cap
Physician Practice Advisor, October 5, 2005
Vermont has agreed to accept federal Medicaid funding caps under Governor James Douglas' Global Commitment to Health plan, which went into effect on Saturday, reports the Boston Globe.
Under the plan, Vermont accepted caps on federal money in return for more control over the state program. Currently, states run Medicaid programs under tight federal rules and regulations. Medicaid spending in Vermont will be no more than $4.7 billion over the next five years, according to a pending agreement. Also according to the agreement, federal funding will pay for approximately 60% of this amount.
Vermont estimates it will save at least $135 million, and perhaps as much as $165 million, under the deal.
