Guards undergo training to deal with mentally ill
Healthcare Security Weekly, October 3, 2005
Two San Mateo (CA) Medical Center security officers are taking part in a training seminar to learn how to deal with mentally ill patients, reports the San Francisco Examiner.
The training is part of a seminar put on by the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office and the local chapter of the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill for police officers and emergency responders.
The seminar introduced the officers to people with schizophrenia and bipolar and other disorders so the guards could better understand how the patients feel about law enforcement. The guards also took part in drills meant to reduce injuries to guards and patients.
The hospital says all of its officers will eventually go through the training.
