TelaDoc offers phone-doctoring

Physician Practice Advisor, September 28, 2005

A new company, Texas-based TelaDoc, connects patients to doctors for diagnoses and consultations over the phone for a nominal fee, The Florida Times-Union reports.

TelaDoc charges users $18 to register, then $4 per month. A call to the doctor costs $35. It is not covered by medical insurance. Patients call with symptoms and receive a callback from a physician within three hours. The physician makes a diagnosis based on the symptoms and patient history, then prescribes a medication. The service is mostly for routine ailments, according to the Times-Union.

Although several states prohibit prescribing medicine without examining the patient, TelaDoc gets around the requirement by having a medical technician visit patients during the registration process to perform a physical exam.
