Washington nursing home resident nets $8M in neglect lawsuit
LTC Liability Monitor, September 29, 2005
A former SNF resident received more than $8 million in a civil lawsuit that alleged severe neglect by Issaquah Care Center in Issaquah, WA, according to the King County Journal. The woman was dependent on the SNF staff while recovering from a stroke that paralyzed the entire left side of her body.
During a four-year residence at Issaquah, the resident's hands and limbs became "contorted, knotted, and stiff like a pretzel," the Journal reported. Both her left arm and left leg were amputated, and all of her teeth had to be extracted, having rotted in her head from a lack of attention. The verdict comes after more than two years of legal battles, the Journal reported. Issaquah's attorneys contended the blame rested with a malfeasant management contractor, fired in 2000 for a range of other violations.
Issaquah, now called Gardens of Issaquah, had a previously clean record with Washington's Department of Social and Health Services, according to the Journal.
