Police shoot suspect fleeing from hospital

Healthcare Security Weekly, September 26, 2005

An Oklahoma City police officer shot and killed a robbery suspect as he fled from Norman Regional Hospital and attempted to steal a car, reports the Oklahoman.

Eldon Dean Cooksey, who was in custody of officers at the hospital on charges of a series of robberies, checked into the facility to be treated for numerous stab wounds.

Cooksey made a run for it Thursday morning and attempted to force an unidentified man out of his car. When the car's owner refused to give up his car and Cooksey continued threatening him, officer Chris Shubert, who had been guarding Cooksey, ordered him to get away from the car. When Cooksey refused, Schubert shot him several times.

The Cleveland district attorney's office is investigating whether the shooting was justified.
