Procedure makes cochlear implant surgery safer
Ambulatory Surgery Reimbursement Update, September 27, 2005
Researchers have developed a new minimally invasive procedure that reduces risks associated with cochlear implant surgery, according to HealthDay News.
Instead of the traditional technique of creating a large scalp ear flap for the implant, the new surgery creates a small "pocket" for the device. Avoiding a scalp flap reduces a number of risks including the likelihood of infection and tissue death, according to HealthDay News.
The new procedure also leaves a smaller and less noticeable scar, according to the researchers whose findings were presented at the annual meeting of American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery.
