Study shows small practices still not onboard with EHRs

EHR Connection, September 26, 2005

Among practices that employ five or fewer full-time physicians, more than half say they have no plans to adopt EHRs, and 41.8% of all practices report they have no immediate plans for EHRs. In larger practices-those that employ 21 or more physicians-only one-fifth do not plan to use EHRs.

Only 14.1% of all medical groups currently use an EHR, with 11.5% having fully implemented one for all physicians at all practice locations, according to the survey of 3,300 medical group practices from the Medical Group Management Association (MGMA) Center for Research and the University of Minnesota School of Public Health.

Only 12.5% of practices with five or fewer full-time equivalent (FTE) physicians have adopted an EHR. Practices with 21 or more FTEs had a 19.5% rate. Fewer than 65% reported that their EHRs provided drug formulary information or clinical guidelines and protocols, while 83.1% had an EHR integrated with a billing system.
