Managing wound pain
Long-Term Care Nursing Advisor, September 23, 2005
To help manage wound-related discomfort in your residents, take the following measures:
- Offer analgesics when pain is anticipated.
- Avoid unnecessary manipulation of the wound.
- Use only normal saline or pH neutral wound cleansers.
- Splint or immobilize the wound during movement and treatment, if possible.
- Teach residents to use relaxation and distraction techniques.
- Match the dressing and treatment product to the wound.
- Warm the cleansing product prior to cleansing the wound, if possible.
