Missing baby returned to hospital
Healthcare Security Weekly, September 19, 2005
A Madison, WI, woman took her 3-month-old baby off of a feeding tube and out of the pediatric neo-natal ward at St. Mary's Hospital, reports WMTV in Madison.
The mother took the baby, who was unable to eat without the feeding tube, home without hospital approval, but returned five hours later. Police are not charging Amanda Garrett with a crime yet, though an investigation is ongoing.
The hospital is also looking into its security policies to determine how Garrett was able to take her baby home without anyone noticing.
In related news, a 17-year-old Alabama female is in police custody after accusations of attempting to kidnap an infant from the Citizens Baptist Medical Center, nbc13.com reports.
Police charged the girl with impersonating and attempted kidnapping after hospital staff said she visited the hospital on several occasions, acted suspiciously, and falsely identified herself.
The baby remained safe and the hospital president says the hospital acted properly with its security measures.
