APTA sponsoring walk for Katrina relief
Rehab Private Practice Alert, September 21, 2005
In conjunction with its National Physical Therapy Month, APTA will sponsor a nationwide "Walk for Hurricane Katrina Relief" walk-a-thon in October.
The walk aims to have participants reach a collective goal of walking the total number of miles from their city to New Orleans, Biloxi, MS, or another affected city. For example, if you live in Chapel Hill, NC, you are 867 miles from New Orleans. The goal would be to have participants walk a total of 867 sponsored miles.
APTA also suggests its members set a monetary target for the walk-a-thon. Other tips for the walk-a-thon that APTA recommends for helping Katrina victims, while also raising physical therapy awareness, include:
- Leading a fitness clinic or warm-up prior to the walk so participants avoid injury
- Secure a creative location for the walk as soon as possible and contact local police about protecting walkers
- Contact local businesses to provide prizes for walkers
- Provide adequate ice and water to participants
- Partner with a local athletic shoe store to advise walkers on the use of proper footwear
Visit www.apta.org for more information about holding a walk in your area.
