Study: Patient-safety materials often miss the mark
Quality Improvement Monitor, September 22, 2005
Patient-safety brochures may not always convey effective or appropriate advice, according to a study in the September Joint Commission Journal on Quality and Patient Safety.
The Commonwealth Fund-supported study found that patient-safety resources from organizations such as the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, the JCAHO, and the National Patient Safety Foundation are often written from the healthcare provider's perspective and miss opportunities to increase public awareness.
For example, none of the advisories studied explained the relationship between medical errors and poor outcomes or discuss current patient-safety initiatives, the Commonwealth Fund reported. The study's authors said more research about the proper role of patients in safety efforts is needed.
