Groups seek psychiatric nurses for hurricane relief

Quality Improvement Monitor, September 22, 2005

Two national nursing organizations are recruiting certified psychiatric and mental health and gerontolgoy nurses to work in Louisiana as part of the Hurricane Katrina relief efforts.

The American Nurses Association (ANA) and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) began the search in response to a request from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. The nurses would be deployed to Louisiana as part of a team that includes psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, substance abuse counselors, and pastoral counselors, according to a press release.

Nurses would work for two weeks, with the last two-week deployment beginning November 1. Travel, housing, and meal expenses would be paid, and nurses would receive a $200 per day stipend, the press release said.
