Los Angeles SNF sued after prohibiting Spanish
LTC Liability Monitor, September 22, 2005
A nursing home in Los Angeles' Torrance neighborhood was sued last week by the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), after prohibiting certain workers from speaking Spanish while on the job, reported the Associated Press (AP).
The English-only rule at the Royalwood Care Center violates federal law, and specifically the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the EEOC contended. The conflict erupted after a SNF worker who spoke only Spanish was fired for doing so, the AP reported. The EEOC suggested that the SNF's rule is not supported by business necessity, and it seeks reinstatement of the worker's job, plus back pay. Royalwood administrators have not yet issued a statement on the case.
