Sports injuries second in injury-related medical expenses
Physician Practice Advisor, September 14, 2005
According to a Medical Expenditure Panel Survey (MEPS) brief-Health Care Expenditures for Injury-Related Conditions, 2002-sports injuries ranked second to vehicle accidents as the cause of injury-related healthcare costs in 2002.
"In 2002, motor vehicle accidents accounted for the largest portion of health care expenses for injuries (37.1%), followed by sports injuries (21.5%) and falls (6.8%). The remaining 34.6% of injury-related expenses were associated with a variety of factors, including weapons, poisonings, fire, water accidents, and other miscellaneous causes," said the MEPS report.
In 2002, $73.4 billion was spent on injury-related conditions, accounting for approximately one in every 10 dollars spent on healthcare.
