New study shows gender a non-factor for angioplasties
Ambulatory Surgery Reimbursement Update, September 13, 2005
A new study indicates that the gender of the patient does not affect the outcome in patients undergoing angioplasties in a blocked artery of the leg, according to Reuters.
The study, published in the Archives of Surgery, identified location of the blockage and quality of blood flow as significant factors in the long-term outcome of the procedure.
Preliminary analysis suggested that gender may play a role, but examination of 173 women and 178 men with blocked arteries in the leg who received treatment over a 10-year period proved otherwise.
Patients undergoing an angioplasty have a balloon-tipped catheter threaded into their arteries to clear fatty plaques, according to Reuters citing the Archives of Surgery report.
