AHA endorses stroke rehab guidelines

The American Heart Association (AHA) endorsed the Veterans Administration/Department of Defense guidelines for stroke rehabilitation in its September issue of "Stroke: Journal of the American Heart Association."
The guidelines recommend:
- Post-stroke care be delivered in a multidisciplinary rehabilitation setting or stroke unit
- Early patient assessment using the National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale of stroke severity
- Early initiation of rehab therapies
- Testing for swallowing ability
- Prevention of deep vein blood clots by having patients walk 50 feet daily and administering blood thinners
- Comprehensive and individualized treatment
- Treatment for depression or emotional disorders
