New Orleans hospital under siege
Healthcare Security Weekly, September 5, 2005
Looters attempted to gain access to Children's Hospital in New Orleans in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, according to United Press International (UPI).
A spokesman for Louisiana governor Kathleen Blanco told UPI that the looters targeted the facility for shelter, food, and drugs, adding that patients and staff at the hospital were in subsequent danger.
As of Thursday, the National Guard had not been able to respond and the hospital's security director had locked down the facility to protect the 100 or so children in the facility.
The Louisiana Hospital Association reported to the Associated Press that looters had not infiltrated any hospitals yet, though looters did break into a parking garage at one facility to steal car batteries and stereos. The Los Angeles Times also reported that snipers stopped the National Guard from transporting critically ill patients from Charity Hospital of Louisiana.
