SNF residents evacuated in Gulf cities

LTC Liability Monitor, September 1, 2005

While nursing homes in Florida got off relatively unscathed, Louisiana and Mississippi SNFs faced a different reality as Hurricane Katrina raced through the South this week. Evacuation efforts ended in tragedy for one nursing home that attempted to bus its residents from their New Orleans facility to a church in Baton Rouge.

The coroner's office for that district said that three residents died as a result of the trip, one on the bus, one in the church, and one after arriving at the hospital, according to the Associated Press. Residents were allegedly exhausted and dehydrated, likely the result of a lengthy bus ride through high-traffic conditions as New Orleans residents fled from the storm.

On Tuesday, as levees caved and citywide flooding continued, about 100 residents from a Jefferson Parish nursing home were evacuated along with hundreds of others by boat, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Similar SNF evacuations occurred in Biloxi, MS, and other areas surrounding storm-ravaged Gulfport, MS.
