Man commits murder-suicide in Atlanta hospital
Healthcare Security Weekly, August 22, 2005
A 71-year-old man walked into his wife's room at St. Joseph's Hospital in Atlanta, shot her, and then turned the gun on himself, reports the Associated Press (AP).
Donald Shields committed the murder-suicide after his wife's treatment for a heart ailment had gone on for several weeks and was not going as well as hoped, according to the AP.
The hospital does not have medical detectors, but hospital officials say they had no reason to be suspicious of Shields, because he had regularly visited of his wife during her stay.
Hospital staff said Shields hadn't shown any signs of violent or depressed behavior prior to the incident.
