Cummings wants Medicare to review racial disparities
Quality Improvement Monitor, August 25, 2005
CMS needs to respond to the results of three studies published in the August 18 New England Journal of Medicine that found disparities in healthcare for black patients, a Maryland congressman wrote in a letter to CMS Administrator Mark McClellan.
Representative Elijah Cummings, D-MD, wanted to know what steps Medicare plans to take to eliminate a racial bias in the care of elderly black patients, The Baltimore Sun reported. The studies noted that many disparities remain for black patients despite some improvements in recent years.
Disparities included less access to operations, tests, medications, and treatments, the studies noted.
