Former Pittsburgh nursing home administrator nailed for fraud

LTC Liability Monitor, August 25, 2005

After two days of deliberation, a federal jury this week found the former head of a shuttered Pittsburgh nursing home and the SNF itself guilty of defrauding Medicare and Medicaid. Administrator Martha Bell allegedly misappropriated $7 million from CMS between 1999 and 2003, according to the Associated Press (AP).

In addition to the fraud charges, Bell was convicted of doctoring records to cover up inadequate resident care at the Ronald Reagan Atrium I Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, and found guilty of eight out of 10 counts of making false statements. Her alleged fraud cache contains $88,000 in charges on nursing home credit cards, including more than 1,400 restaurant meals over a three-year time frame, the AP reported.

Scheduled for sentencing on December 2, Bell will also go to trial in Pennsylvania state court on charges of involuntary manslaughter, which stem from the October 2001 drowning death of an 88-year-old Alzheimer's resident at the SNF.
