Survey: CA physicians will not accept new Medicare patients if payment cuts occur
Physician Practice Advisor, August 24, 2005
A majority of California physicians surveyed said that they would not accept new Medicare patients if scheduled cuts in Medicare reimbursements are made.
Medicare is scheduled to cut payments to physicians by 4.3% in 2006, part of a series of payment cuts. The California Medical Association conducted the recent survey of 490 physicians. Sixty percent of respondents said they would refuse new Medicare patients. Forty percent said they would pull out of the Medicare program altogether.
The Government Accountability Office and Medicare Payment Advisory Commission have advised the government to change the current reimbursement formula, according to a San Diego Union-Tribune article. CMS is currently developing pay-for-performance pilot programs.
