Leg strength improves knee surgery success

Rehab Private Practice Alert, August 17, 2005

A recent University of Delaware study found that patients undergoing total knee replacement surgery have a quicker recovery time if they have strong quadriceps muscles, reports Reuters.

The study suggests that people anticipating knee surgery should seek out physical therapy to improve the strength of the quadriceps.

By strengthening the quads first, the study found that patients showed a significant improvement on the Timed Up and Go test and the Stair Climbing test.
