Body exhumed in Indiana SNF death investigation

LTC Liability Monitor, August 18, 2005

The body of a deceased Indiana SNF resident was exhumed as part of an investigation into her death, reported the Indianapolis Star. Patricia Stocksdale, an Alzheimer's resident, died at the Green Valley Care Center in New Albany, IN, earlier this month, allegedly of natural causes.

Floyd County Coroner Becky Davis Balmer told the Star she received information from several of the SNF's employees that prompted an investigation, and Stockdale's body will be autopsied. Balmer did not give specific details, but said there were several "red flags" in the information she received, including inconsistencies in written statements about the resident's care, a lack of proper documentation, and underreported bruises and other injuries, the New Albany Tribune reported.

Stockdale's family alleges another Green Valley employee told them there were as many as three other "suspicious deaths" under review at the SNF, the Tribune reported.
