Know the control categories in your lab

Lab Safety Advisor, August 16, 2005

What is the difference between an engineering control, an administrative control and a work practice control?

An engineering control minimizes exposure by either reducing or removing the hazard at the source or isolating workers from the hazard.  An administrative control minimizes exposure levels by controlling the exposure by scheduling production and tasks.  A work practice control alters the manner in which a task is performed.
