AARP endorses pay-for-performance legislation
Physician Practice Advisor, August 10, 2005
The American Association for Retired Persons (AARP) has endorsed pay-for-performance legislation currently working its way through Congress.
"Experience from Medicare's demonstrations with hospitals and private insurer's initiatives with physicians and health plans indicates that 'pay-for-performance' gets results. Aligning payment with performance can provide effective incentives for doctors, hospitals, and other institutions to improve care for older and disabled Americans," AARP spokesman John Rother said in a press release.
The "Medicare Value Purchasing Act of 2005" was introduced by Sens. Chuck Grassley and Max Baucus. It would:
- give the full Medicare payment amount only to physicians who report quality data
- cut the Medicare payment to all other physicians by 2%
- make quality data available to the public via the Department of Health and Human Services
