Louisiana officials to review "lax" nursing home penalties

LTC Liability Monitor, August 11, 2005

State officials in Louisiana this week announced a massive review of the state's regulatory system to pinpoint new ways to deal with SNFs "that break the rules," according to the Times-Picayune. There are 309 nursing homes in Louisiana, which were collectively assessed $1,168,719 in federal and state fines over the past four years. By comparison, the Times-Picayune reported, Mississippi had $3 million in federal fines during the same period for 204 total SNFs, and Texas, which has 1,137 SNFs, had $7.4 million.

At least 33 nursing home deaths since 1999 in Louisiana were results of poor care or negligence, the Times-Picayune cited, and the state's SNFs consistently rank at or near the bottom of national quality indicator surveys for long-term care.
