Two years ago, Saint Luke's Health System in Kansas City, MO, was faced with a challenge: Improve payer mix while enhancing the health of the community and remaining true to its mission. At first, it seemed like a tall order. But thanks to some creative thinking, a redistribution of marketing dollars, strong support at the highest level, and a business strategy that reflected the realities of a dramatically changing market, Saint Luke's achieved all of its goals. In fact, market share went up while marking costs went down.
