Construction on $150M flu vaccine factory begins in PA

Infection Control Monitor, July 22, 2005

Sanofi-Pasteur began construction this week on a new $150 million Pennsylvania factory, a facility designed to boost the nation's dwindling flu vaccine supply, reports the Associated Press.

The factory, which is located 80 miles north of Philadelphia in Swiftwater, will not be ready for production until 2009. It will replace an existing factory in Swiftwater and double the vaccine production.

Sanofi-Pasteur, a division of Sanofi-Aventis SA, is the only company manufacturing injectable flu vaccines in the United States.

Last year, only about 57 million people received flu vaccines in the United States.

Elsewhere, GlaxoSmithKline, which is headquartered in Philadelphia, has applied to have its flu vaccine, Fluarix, made available in the United States. It is currently available in 75 countries.
