Medical errors bill clears Congress

Healthcare Security Weekly, August 1, 2005

A proposed bill created to increase reporting of medical errors received approval from Congress and is now in the hands of President Bush, reports the Associated Press.

The legislation calls for healthcare officials to voluntarily report medical errors to patient safety organizations, which would then analyze the data and make recommendations on ways to improve the healthcare system.

The information that healthcare facilities report would remain confidential and only be used to study, not sanction, in order for more accurate reporting.

The hope is that the study will eventually reduce the number of medical error lawsuits, therefore saving the healthcare industry billions of dollars.
