PA hospital questioned in OxyContin theft
Healthcare Security Weekly, August 1, 2005
The Pennsylvania Health Department is questioning Grand View Hospital in Sellersville about how it allowed a pharmacy worker to steal 30,000 does of OxyContin over the course of three years, according to the Allentown Morning Call.
Brian S. Young, a pharmacist at the hospital, allegedly stole 30,000 pills worth $150,000, taking as many as 25 pills per day.
The department is investigating whether the hospital should have discovered the theft much earlier by following the agency's requirements.
Officials expect the probe to take two weeks and violations could result in fines up to $20,000.
The hospital has since changed its policies on disbursement of drugs after another pharmacist discovered the thefts by noticing someone entered his name into a logbook saying he distributed OxyContin.
