Avoid a PPE Fashion Emergency!

Lab Safety Advisor, August 1, 2005

When you review your lab's PPE needs, it's important to include all personal protective equipment each of your employees must wear in the course of the day. This includes a lab coat, gloves, and face protection, if needed. Those who saw our June 14 issue may remember that we reviewed OSHA regulations as well as lab coat weight.

Gloves must be hypoallergenic and supplied in various sizes. They can be made of latex or vinyl. Nitrile gloves are also a good choice to prevent latex allergies from occurring. Face protection is to be available should the need arise.

Because so much of the current lab testing is closed-tube sampling, face protection is not needed when engineering controls are in place.

However, safety goggles or glasses are needed when handling chemicals and strict adherence to the use of these devices is necessary to keep employees safe.
