Gangrene leads to charges for FL assisted living facility
LTC Liability Monitor, July 28, 2005
An investigation of a Lake Worth, FL assisted living facility by the Florida attorney general's Medicaid Fraud Unit has led to charges of aggravated neglect in the case of a 96-year-old man whose foot became gangrenous, the Fort Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel reported. A pair of doctors and the nursing director at the Courtyards of Crystal Palms failed to properly care for the man's injured left foot, the report alleges, and as a result, he became infected with gangrene and maggots, resulting in the amputation of two toes.
The investigation also suggested the ALF altered the man's medical records to reflect that certain care was given on days it actually was not, according to the Sun-Sentinel. Up to five years in prison and $5,000 in fines await the doctors and nurse if convicted.
