Work records inaccurate at Pittsburgh-area SNF

LTC Liability Monitor, July 28, 2005

Worries about a potentially dangerous staffing shortage at a Robinson, PA nursing home led to discoveries of inflated workforce tallies and inaccurate reflections of how many nurses were working, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported. A nurse at the Atrium I Nursing and Rehabilitation Center who resigned in 2003 testified under a grant of immunity from the U.S. District Court that on some days, many residents, including some with Alzheimer's, were not adequately bathed, fed, looked after, or provided restorative care because of a severe shortage of aides. She testified that manipulated bookkeeping and staff records hid that shortage.

The SNF and its former administrator have plead not guilty to one count of defrauding Medicare and 10 counts of making false statements and being negligent in patient care, according to the Post-Gazette. Relatives of four former Atrium residents have decried the SNF's lack of care, hygiene, and staff support, and also mentioned a number of injuries that occurred there.
