Study: Sub-par care for Medicare beneficiaries dependent on practice characteristics

Physician Practice Advisor, July 27, 2005

Physician and practice characteristics are linked to Medicare beneficiaries receiving services below national quality goals, a new study by the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) says.

Researchers found that practice characteristics such as type and percentage of revenue derived from Medicaid were correlated with differences in the quality of care that Medicare patients received. The more money the practice earned from Medicaid, the less likely Medicare beneficiaries were to receive six basic preventative services. These services included diabetic monitoring, eye examinations, and cancer screening.

For more information on this, see the July 27 issue of JAMA, available here.
