Parents arrested for trying to abduct infant

Healthcare Security Weekly, July 25, 2005

Police arrested the parents of a newborn baby for attempting to abduct their own infant from a nursery at Presbyterian Hospital in Charlotte, NC, according to News 14 Carolina.

Juanita Annette Davis Slate and Walter Edward Mitchell face a number of criminal charges, including child abuse, after grabbing their four-day-old baby and putting him in a black canvas bag.

The parents tried to run from the hospital but an ankle bracelet monitoring system sounded alarms and triggered a Code Pink, which alerts all hospital workers of an infant abduction.

Hospital workers located the parents and chased them outside where security guards took them into custody. Police told News 14 that the parents might have taken the infant because the department of social services had already taken away their other children.
