PA hospital security cameras help catch murder suspect

Healthcare Security Weekly, July 18, 2005

Pennsylvania Hospital security cameras assisted police in tracking down the man suspected of killing Trish McDermott, an X-ray technician at the Center City hospital, according to the Philadelphia Daily News.

Police arrested Juan Covington after security cameras at a bus station caught him shooting McDermott on camera. Authorities released the video to local news telecasts, asking for help in identifying the man in the video. An anonymous tip pointed police in his direction and after further investigation, they discovered he also worked at the hospital for a medical-waste removal subcontractor.

Investigators then used hospital security tape to shore up Covington's identification after it showed him enter the hospital shortly after the murder wearing the same clothes as the killer.

Covington admitted to the murder after police confronted him with the evidence.
