Study finds mixed views on SNF care

LTC Liability Monitor, July 21, 2005

A study released last week from the Kaiser Family Foundation revealed some negativity and lapses in the nation's view and knowledge of how nursing home care works. Nursing homes ranked poorly in the public's perception of whether they are doing a "good job," with only 35% of survey-takers agreeing. Forty-one percent thought residing in a nursing home made people worse off than before, while only 19% said people were better off.

Further, 63% said there is not enough government regulation of nursing homes, according to Kaiser, which is a nonprofit healthcare research organization. Finally, about 30% of Kaiser's survey respondents said private insurance would pay for long-term care, while only 13% answered that Medicare and Medicaid are the usual sources. The truth is that insurance only covers nursing home costs about 8% of the time, while government programs pick up the tab 46% of the time, Kaiser reported. Click here to read the report.
