Beleaguered Maine nursing home to close

LTC Liability Monitor, July 14, 2005

A troubled Cape Elizabeth, ME nursing home plans to close by August 1, and almost 50 residents will have to find new homes, according to an article in the Portland Press Herald. Connecticut-based Haven Healthcare, which bought the home in 2003, made the decision after federal officials imposed a $3,050 per day fine and denied its Maine facility payments for new admissions based on problems cited in a state investigation.

Haven Health Center also lost its Medicaid and Medicare reimbursements for several weeks in May and June after investigators discovered that a resident who fell and suffered a fractured pelvis went two full days without a physician's care. The Center has lost its reimbursements before, and has a history of violations dating back to its days as Viking Community nursing home. The Center's nearby, 60-bed assisted living facility will remain open, the Herald reported.
