CA man kills wife then shoots himself at hospital
Healthcare Security Weekly, July 11, 2005
An 81-year-man shot his wife in the head and then killed himself at Walnut Creek (CA) Hospital according to the Tri-Valley Herald in Pleasanton, CA.
Donald George went to visit his 77-year-old wife Betty at the hospital after she transferred there from their assisted-living facility earlier in the week.
Betty suffered from dementia and diabetes and her condition was reportedly worsening. Donald entered her room and went through with the murder-suicide, despite the presence of a nurse and another patient in the room.
The nurse didn't see him pull out the gun because she was treating the other patient behind a curtain.
Security said it was a rare incident and was tough to prevent because normal procedures wouldn't call for suspicion when an elderly man visits his wife.
