Compressed gas cylinders can be very hazardous projectiles

Lab Safety Advisor, July 12, 2005

Compressed gas cylinders can be very hazardous projectiles in the laboratory if they are left unattended or transported inappropriately.  When practical, all valves on flammable gas cylinders should be closed before all employees leave the laboratory at night.  Bleed off all pressure from the lines and regulator.  Use secondary shut off valves only for brief shutdowns. Do not heat cylinders or place them near a heat source or source of ignition.  If a cylinder is exposed to extreme temperatures, either hot or cold, allow the cylinder to slowly equilibrate to room temperature.  Cylinders must not be purchased or accepted whose fittings do not conform to the standards of the National Compressed Gas Association.  For more information go to http://www.techstreet.com/info/cga.html.
