Medicare hopes benefits checkable in real time by year's end
Physician Practice Advisor, July 6, 2005
A system is in the works that may allow physicians and practitioners to check a patient's eligibility for benefits in real time by year's end, according to Government Health IT.
CMS is already testing real-time automated transactions it hopes will be ready for use by hospitals and others by September, with plans for a Web-based system coming online shortly thereafter, said Medicare officials.
Also in the works is a Web system that will allow people to check the status of Medicare claims and determine when a claim payment is deposited into bank accounts.
The status of these systems was announced by Karen Trudel, deputy director of the Office of E-Health Standards and Services at the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), at a recent Department of Health and Human Services advisory committee meeting.
