Patients, staff face TB exposure from infected worker at MA hospitals

Infection Control Monitor, June 17, 2005

Health officials at four Massachusetts hospitals are setting up free tuberculosis (TB) testing for hundreds of patients who may have been exposed to an infected healthcare worker, The Boston Globe reports.

More than 700 patients and hundreds of staff at those facilities face having been contaminated by the surgical resident infected with TB since the beginning of the year. Health officials say the female resident is on medical leave and responding well to treatment.

It was only earlier this month that health officials became aware that she was infected with the highly contagious bacterial infection. The unidentified resident had worked at the Veterans Affairs Hospital in West Roxbury, Boston Medical Center, Brockton Hospital, and Cape Cod Hospital.
