New OSU ED will streamline care

Quality Improvement Monitor, July 1, 2005

Ohio State University (OSU) Hospital East recently spent $5 million to add a 25,000-square-foot ED to alleviate overcrowding and improve services at the Columbus, OH, hospital, according to Business First of Columbus.

The 200-bed hospital has seen an increase in patients since OSU acquired the former Park Medical Center from Quorum Health Group in 1999. The expanded ED is slated to open July 5, the paper reported.

The expanded ED will handle an influx of patients and will have more space to care for patients, the paper said. ED visits will exceed 35,000 this year, the paper said.

The new ED will also streamline operations. It will have two entrances, one for walk-in patients and one for ambulances, the paper reported.

Walk-in patients will enter near the triage rooms, where they will receive an initial assessment, the paper said. Ambulances will bring in patients near the trauma rooms.
