QIOs to help hospitals implement technology
Quality Improvement Monitor, June 23, 2005
Quality improvement organizations (QIOs) will begin working with hospitals to help them support use of technology, including electronic health records, according to a report by The Commonwealth Fund.
As part of a three-year contract with Medicare, QIOs will provide free assistance to physician practices interested in adopting electronic health records. That assistance will include assessing and redesigning office workflow and care processes as well as implementing information technology to improve care.
President Bush in April 2004 established the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology to help further widespread adoption of electronic health records within 10 years. The office will coordinate the spending of nearly $4 billion for information technology programs, according to the Department of Health and Human Services.
QIOs will also begin working with hospitals and home health agencies during this three-year period, which begins in August.
