Lab Safety Q&A: Lab Coats

Lab Safety Advisor, June 14, 2005

Q: Is it possible to designate a lab aisle as clean if staff wearing lab coats and carrying samples in test tube racks pass through the aisle?

A: If a vendor comes to make a sales call and walks through the lab from the door to the "dirty" area to the "clean" supervisor's office and does not stop to chat in the "dirty" area or otherwise come in contact with contaminated casework, etc. then it is OK. The reverse would be similar. If you have your PPE on and are transporting specimens from point A to point B through a clean area, you are OK. As long as you don't answer the phone or use the computer in the clean area with your PPE or (e.g. lab coat, gloves) or perform any testing, then it is OK.
