Medical data bill could save lives, money
Ambulatory Surgery Reimbursement Update, June 21, 2005
A new national standard for secure, electronic medical records accessible on one central data source is being encouraged and pursued by Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist and Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton.
The new standard's goal is to eliminate waste and inefficency in healthcare, saving as much as $200 billion a year, according to The Tennessean.
"We ultimately will be saving lives and saving money," Frist said last week.
The bill would allocate $125 million for five years to help the setting up of information systems meeting national standards now in development.
If the plan is successful, it would allow different computer systems to communicate with each other, so facilities, doctors, patients, and pharmacies throughout the United States can access information at one source, according to The Tennessean.
